The Curing Rack Essence Subscription Box is a monthly box that offers a convenient way to learn and experiment with new and exotic ingredients. Thee boxes are from Polish and Lather an artisanal soap seller located in good ol' Philadelphia (HOLLA). Each box contains at LEAST 5 ingredients, a recipe card and some info on the items included. Here's the Box Breakdown
first look in the curing rack essence box
Our first look inside the Essence Box. It was shipped inside a larger outer box and this was the box inside the box (boxception).

what's in the essence box from polish and later
Everything that we received in our Essence Box. The theme is "Indian" and there are so many new flavors and spices in here we didn't know what to do with ourselves!

So what is all this stuff?

Our insert was an envelope stuffed full of recipes and information!

There were four cards in total

One, a recipe for Brown Mustard Seed & Curry Leaf Shrimp (YUM)

The other for Curry Leaf & Hibiscus Hair Oil

chai spices with vanilla
This Chai was blended using a traditional Indian recipe with some vanilla. Great for coffee, desserts, or really anything because chai really is that good. Love that this was included - perfect flavor for these colder months!

amchoor powder
This is a new one for us! This honey scented seasoning is derived from dried unripe green mangoes and makes this a great citrus-y seasoning for curries and samosa. We are going to do a little bit of work with this and as always check our Instagram for our results!

how are curry leaves different from curry powder
Curry Leaves are NOT to be confused with Curry Powder. We didn't think curry was a plant before this box. Now we know it is, but it's not in curry spices - smelling these leaves once is proof enough. They have a smoky and green smell (if that makes any sense) it's honestly unlike anything we've ever tried. Beyond food these are also great for hair, skin and scalp

turmeric root
Beyond being a spice Turmeric has many medicinal properties and is also used as a dye (it's orange and oh so beautiful)

assam tea
A perfect example of an Indian tea Assam has a robust flavor and is usually enjoyed as a breakfast tea

A black tea from the Assam region of India - this definitely will give you a little kick of caffeine

It steeps a beautiful red and gold color and tastes wonderful! Nothing bitter about it and it pairs deliciously with honey

red sandalwood powder
Another new item for us. Made from the heartwood of a tree in South India and is most commonly used in beauty items. Despite it's name this doesn't have much of a scent that we could detect but it is a gorgeous red color

brown mustard seeds
These brown seeds have a hotter flavor compared to their yellow counterparts. We've never tried them before and cannot wait (we love mustard)!

So in summary

We look for three things in a subscription box; quality, curation, and presentation. The Curing Rack Essence Box is a wonderful way to play around with flavors and different whole foods each month. We love that they are themed boxes and the sheer amount of items that we received is awesome. The presentation is great. Everything is packaged well and arrives exactly as it should. The quality is phenomenal. Each of these spices is of a wonderful quality! Curation is exceptional. We received 4 items out of 7 that we'd never heard of! We love that in a subscription box - being introduced to new things and ideas. An excellent subscription for someone looking to branch out or the avid explorer of all things!
