Here’s the Box Breakdown

what's in the january piquant post

Here’s everything that we received in the January Piquant Post package. The region this month is French Cuisine and we received four tasty sounding spices and recipes!

So what is all this stuff?

Our first blend is Quatre Epices and is accompanied by a recipe for Beef Stew in Red Wine.

This blend includes; white pepper, ginger, nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon. This is probably the most complicated of all the recipes included this month – we love that they tend to have a range of difficulty levels from beginner all the way to learning different technical kitchen skills!

Our next blend is Dijon Spice. The recipe that comes with this dish (we LOVE mustard by the way) is a Chicken Dijon but the sauce you make with the recipe can also be used as a vinaigrette or on whitefish

The dijon spice contains; mustard seed, coriander, thyme, basil, onion powder and black pepper and the Chicken Dijon recipe looks fairly simple with just 4 steps.

Our next blend is a Vadouvan French Curry. Milder and sweeter than Indian curry and super popular at the moment this curry is sure to be a crowd pleaser. The recipe that came with this spice blend is Vadouvan Roasted Vegetables and could be made to accompany any of the meat recipes included this month!

This blend includes an all star cast of; shallot, onion, garlic, fenugreek, turmeric, cumin, nutmeg, cardamom, cloves, fennel seed, mustard seed, curry leaves and cayenne pepper.

Our final spice blend is Herbs de Provence, a traditional French seasoning that enhances all the food it meets! Our recipe that we received with this was Skillet Herbed Fish that sounded delicious and also boasted one of the simplest recipes ever!

This blend includes thyme, marjoram, savory, tarragon, basil, fennel seed, and lavender. Because this seemed simpleĀ  enough and we LOVE fish we decided this would be the recipe we’d create this month

Okay so now what?

You can use any type of fish you’d like. Because we have a large family we go with inexpensive fish (this is Pollock). But this spice blend would taste amazing on anything. You pat your fish dry and then salt and pepper. After this you coat the fish both top and bottom (if skinless) with the Herbs de Provence

Add this to your hot pan with oil. Cook filets until golden brown and crispy on edges (both sides) and that is it!

Garnish with lemon and parsley! This was really good, all of the kids ate it too!

So in summary

We look for three things in a subscription box; quality, curation, and presentation. The Piquant Post Box is a wonderful way to keep your cooking and your palette fresh. We love the variety and that we get to experience new regions of the world each month. The presentation is great, everything arrives perfectly. The quality is amazing. Each spice is carefully blended and made in small batches. And curation. Well, it’s a packet full of French flavors – so that’s a win! We loved this month’s selection and think France is a great (and delicious choice)!
